The Bao Buns Everyone Still Talks About

The Bao Buns Everyone Still Talks About

The Dish That Helped Put Bao Buns on London’s Food Map

Before bao buns became a popular dish across many menus in the UK, we were already serving them up to Londoners. We were one of the first brands to introduce bao buns to the UK restaurant scene back in 2012, and years later, they’re one of our most talked-about dishes on the menu (aside from our amazing ramen!)

Our Bao Bun’s Second Name

You may have heard our bao buns are referred to as Hirata buns. While the folded, open style bao is now recognised all over the world, it became popular in Japan through modern izakayas and ramen restaurants (like ours!) The name ‘Hirata bun’ is often used in the West to describe this style of bao, thanks to Japanese chefs who’ve helped bring the folded bun into the spotlight. Whether you call them bao buns or Hirata buns, one thing is for sure, they're just as delicious!

Soft, Steamed, and Packed with Flavour.

Our soft, steamed buns are packed with bold, umami flavours. The fluffy dough gives a lightweight texture while letting the rich, savoury fillings do the talking. Bao buns aren’t as simple as they look, it’s very easy to get them wrong because the yeast dough is very temperamental and has to be handled with delicate care - achieving a soft pillowy texture. Which is why we’re so renowned for getting them right!

There’s a Bao for Everyone

Whether you go for our spicy chicken karaage, pork belly, or veggie pumpkin croquette option, there is a bao bun for everyone depending on what you fancy. They don’t take long to arrive at your table and are super easy to eat, and by the time you know it, the boa bun is gone!

A Small Bun with a Big Impact

What also makes bao buns so popular is how versatile they are. They work perfectly as a starter, a side dish to share, or even as a little extra alongside your Tonkotsu ramen, if you’re feeling particularly hungry. There’s something satisfying about picking up a freshly steamed bao bun and sinking your teeth including a cloud like dough.. They may be small, but they leave a lasting impression, which is probably why so many of our guests order them time and time again.

Why People Keep Coming Back

It’s no surprise to us they continue to be a highly complimented dish. We don’t like to brag…but our buns really are some of the best around. If you have tried them before, then you already know the deal. But if not, then please consider this your sign to stop by this week and see what the hype is about!
